Constantia Muslim Society Draft Constitution
AsSalamu alykum warahmatullahi waBarakatuhu
On Saturday 29 June 2013 a group of concerned residents called an emergency meeting at masjid Munier in response to a percieved crisis at the masjid. There was a dispute between the then Imam and the committee and the case was being dealt with by the MJC arbitration committee.
Present at the meeting was 10 residents as well as Ml Moegsien Barends (Imam), Ml Bienyamin Osman (invited by a resident - happens to be on the arbitration committee dealing with Imam vs Committee case BUT clearly indicated he was there merely as observer NOT representing MJC) and Ml Khalil Osman who leads daily prayers at Masjid Mahmood.
At the meeting Ml Moegsien Barends announced that he had subsequently resigned, subject to terms agreed by himself and the committee with the MJC as arbitrator.
The meeting decided that we needed to engage the committee to request participation in masjid affairs and maintenance. It was decided that a meeting should be held where an official, constituted organisation can be formed to see to the affairs of the growing Constantia Muslim residents congregation, working hand in hand with curent masjid committees. The meeting was scheduled for 28 July 2013 at Masjid Munier.
Eight members present were each tasked with visiting 10 households to inform residents of the meeting and gather census information of each household. We also sent out emails to all residents whose emails we have on data base.
We also sent an email to the chairman of Masjid Munier to request clarity on matters and were informed that a temporary Imam had been appointed and a process of advertising for a new Imam will take place after Ramadaan with participation of the MJC. The taraweeg and eid programmes was all arranged.
The meeting at Masjid Munier on Sunday 28 July 2013 was attended by 25 residents.
Past experiences of last 25 years activities and interaction with masjid committees was related by some residents. A question of whether organisation was being formed to overthrow committees who had persevered for all the years, commuting from Schaapkraal, Grassy Park etc. to see to the Masaajids, after being evicted by force by the Apartheid regime. There was an agreement that an organisation was needed but that it should be clear in the constitution that the organisation will work with existing committees.
A mandate was given to a task team (Karriem Domingo, Armin Hassiem, Abbas Jamie, Abdul Qadir Khatieb, Goolam Logday and Faiez Martin) to draft a constitution for Constantia Muslim Society (temporary name) for presentation at next meeting with the view of then officially launching the organisation.
The urgent matter of meeting with the Masjid Munier committee to engage them on participation in the process of appointing a new Imam and general masjid matters. Nagib duToit, Mujeeb Gangraker, and Goolam Logday to represent Constantia residents.
